Greater Noida: A 21-year-old woman jumped to death from the roof of a 17-storey apartment building in Greater Noida on Wednesday. In a suicide note, she accused her flatmates of "torturing" her after she was caught on camera stealing a herbal cream from a store last week.
Ritu Yadav, a first-year BTech student at a private university, was from Kanpur but lived in an apartment in NRI City that she shared with four other women, police said.
All four were booked for abetting Ritu's suicide under Section 306 of the IPC.
Anil Pratap Singh, in-charge, Kasna police station, said Ritu had stolen a cream worth Rs 80 from a departmental store at Jagat Farms in Greater Noida on April 16. "She was caught on a CCTV camera installed in the store. On Tuesday evening, her friends were told about the incident by the store manager when they went there for shopping again. They informed her parents about the incident. She was ashamed of the incident and feared legal action," Singh said.
Police said they were questioning her roommates. "In her suicide note written in English, Ritu mentioned her roommates had hit her with a beer bottle and tortured her. But we have not found any beer bottle. There are no injury marks to suggest she was hit by a beer bottle," Singh said.
Superintendent of police, Noida (rural), Abhishek Yadav, said, "The roommates have told us that on the day of theft, though they were with her, they did not notice the incident. However, the store manager on Tuesday threatened to take legal action against them as well. So, in order to avoid legal action, they asked her to settle the case independently." The store manager did not file any complaint about the April 16 theft.
Security guards at NRI City said they heard a thud around 6.30 am on Wednesday and rushed inside to find Ritu's body lying on the compound. They informed the police, who rushed her to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead. "Her body has been sent for an autopsy and her family has been informed," Singh said.
